Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuit

If you are a Mississippi resident who has been harmed by injuries caused by a doctor’s surgical use of transvaginal mesh, contact a transvaginal mesh lawyer in Jackson, MS. You may be entitled to legal compensation for the injuries sustained as a result of being subjected to the dangers of transvaginal mesh.

What Is Transvaginal Mesh?

Transvaginal mesh is used as part of a surgical procedure to help women suffering from a pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence. A pelvic organ prolapse is caused by a weakened pelvic floor, which has a number of causes, including:

  • Childbirth
  • Age
  • Obesity

Stress urinary incontinence, on the other hand, is a form of urinary incontinence caused by coughing, sneezing or exerting oneself while exercising. Similar to a pelvic organ prolapse, stress urinary incontinence can be caused by childbirth, aging or obesity.

The FDA first cleared transvaginal mesh for stress urinary incontinence procedures in 1996, and in 2002, the FDA then cleared the way for using transvaginal mesh in pelvic organ prolapse operations. According to the FDA, market data indicated that 300,000 women underwent pelvic organ prolapse procedures, and an additional 260,000 women had stress urinary incontinence procedures performed.

33% of 2010’s pelvic organ prolapse procedures, 75% of which used transvaginal mesh. 80% of stress urinary incontinence procedures were performed with transvaginal mesh.

Known Dangers of Transvaginal Mesh

Starting in 2008, the FDA warned that transvaginal mesh carries the risk of a number of adverse and harmful side effects. In July of 2011, the FDA issued the warning once more.

Common health risks and complications of transvaginal mesh, as cited by the FDA, include:

  • Erosion of Mesh Through the Vagina
  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Urinary Problems
  • Organ Perforation
  • Bleeding
  • Dyspareunia
  • Recurring Prolapses and/or Incontinence
  • Vaginal Scarring
  • Vaginal Shrinkage
  • And More

Some of these symptoms required women to undergo additional surgeries to revise the complications created by the transvaginal mesh, and other women required hospitalization as well.

Transvaginal Mesh Lawsuits

There are a number of transvaginal synthetic mesh manufacturers in the United States, but in the FDA’s original 2008 warning, nine were specifically mentioned. Among the manufacturers mentioned were:

  • Ethicon (A Johnson & Johnson Subsidiary)
  • Boston Scientific
  • Cook Medical
  • American Medical Systems
  • R. Bard

In its 2011 report, the FDA noted that 1,503 reports of injury, death and malfunction existed for pelvic organ prolapse repairs, while an additional 1,371 reports existed for stress urinary incontinence repairs. Seven deaths were linked to pelvic repairs, and three of those deaths were directly tied to the procedures used when placing the mesh.

Finally, the FDA report indicated that women who received transvaginal mesh in their procedures were at a substantially greater risk of complication compared to patients who received traditional procedures that did not use transvaginal mesh.

The states of Washington and California have already sued Johnson & Johnson over their vaginal mesh implants, and many lawsuits have been filed by individual litigants as well. For this reason, transvaginal mesh has been referred to as “the stuff of nightmares“. Don’t let your transvaginal mesh injuries give you nightmares. Get the legal help you need to hold these manufacturers accountable.
