Hip and Knee Replacement

Going to the doctor for a hip and/or knee replacement requires trust in the procedure and the doctor performing said procedure. In 2013, Medicare alone paid for more than 400,000 hip and knee replacement inpatient primary procedures. And, given that hospitalization costs alone exceed $7 billion for these procedures, one would be forgiven for thinking that hip and knee replacements are safe and largely worry-free. Unfortunately, that conclusion would be wrong, especially with regards to DePuy’s hip and knee replacements.

DePuy Hip Replacement Risks and Dangers

While hip and knee replacement device makers market their products as the solution for hip and/or knee pain and mobility issues, the facts tell a different story. Well over 7 million Americans are already living with an artificial hip or knee, and many of these individuals have filed lawsuits against the makers of their artificial hips and knees.

DePuy Orthopaedics has been the target of many lawsuits thanks to its defective hip and knee products. On August 24, 2010, DePuy voluntarily recalled two of its hip replacement products. DePuy’s ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR XL Acetabular System were failing at higher rates than other forms of hip replacement.

Worse, DePuy also knew about the high failure rates for their hip implants three years prior to the products being recalled. DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, recognized their hip replacement alone had a 40 percent failure rate within a five-year period, according to court records from previous lawsuits.

DePuy used metal-on-metal replacements for their recalled produces, which employed metal balls and sockets that create friction when they rub together. This friction can shed particles of the metal into surrounding tissue and the bloodstream. As a result, patients with a DePuy hip replacement was at risk of having 100 times the normal level of cobalt and chromium in their blood. This, in turn, can cause necrosis and tissue infection as well as:

  • Heart Damage
  • Kidney Damage
  • Liver Damage
  • Nervous System Damage

Additionally, when the replacements fail, patients then must undergo a painful “revision” surgery to correct the failures of the previous joint. Such procedures are needed when an artificial joint no longer fits properly. Unsurprisingly, significant pain and walking difficulty result from these faulty hip replacements.

If you or a loved one has suffered as a result of having a DePuy hip or knee replacement, contact a DePuy hip and knee replacement attorney. You may be entitled to deserved legal compensation for the harms suffered.

DePuy Knee Replacement Risks and Dangers

DePuy’s record with knee replacements is similarly troubling. In 2013, DePuy voluntarily recalled their knee Limb Preservation System (LPS), a replacement device for patients suffering from severe soft tissue damage and bone defects. The FDA issued a statement on the Class 1 recall in 2013, informing the public that such a recall is reserved for products that could cause seriously adverse health consequences and/or death with reasonable probability.

The FDA stated that the LPS posed a fracture risk that could lead to severe complications, such as:
  • Loss of Function
  • Loss of Limb
  • Severe Infection
  • Compromised Soft Tissue
  • Death
Signs of a DePuy knee replacement problem include:
  • Limited Range of Movement
  • Dislocation
  • Stiffness
  • Infection
  • Fracture
  • Swelling and Pain
  • Decreased Walking Ability
  • And More
