Being injured on the job is a devastating experience. It can impact not only you but also your family’s well being. You may be out of work for days, weeks or months while recuperating. Worse yet, you may not be able to work again.
This is where workers’ compensation can be a tremendous help. There are specific benefits that you are entitled to if you get hurt or become ill while on the clock.
If you’ve been hurt on the job, you are entitled to 3 types of benefits:
Your employer has insurance in place to provide workers with the compensation they need if they require medical treatment. This insurance is specifically intended to be used for any medical treatment that your doctor prescribes. You’re also able to choose which doctor you would prefer to offer treatment to you.
If there is any treatment you’re currently undergoing related to your work injury or illness, the insurance company must cover it. They must also provide coverage for any future medical treatment that you may require.
It’s possible that you may not be able to return to work for a while after your illness or injury. If that’s the case, the insurance company is required to pay two-thirds of your average weekly rate. This is called temporary total disability benefits.
Until the doctor says that it’s okay for you to go back to work or places you at Maximum Medical Improvement, the insurance company must continue to provide these benefits to you.
If your injury or illness has prevented you from ever returning to your previous job, you may be entitled to permanent benefits. These benefits are based on your loss of wage-earning capacity. If you are partially impaired because of the loss of a limb or body part, you may also be entitled to these types of benefits.
These benefits can be confusing for some people. We don’t want you to feel overwhelmed. Contact one of our experienced workers’ compensation attorneys to talk you through these benefits and more. We will help get you the most money possible for your workers’ compensation claim.
