What Is a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

A traumatic brain injury, also commonly referred to as TBI, is a type of injury that occurs as the result of a blow or jolt to the head. It is estimated that 2.5 million people suffer a TBI each year. TBIs are classified as mild, moderate or severe. Falls, violence, car accidents, sports and explosive blasts can lead to traumatic brain injuries. Closed or open head injuries can cause traumatic brain injuries.

Symptoms of a TBI

The following are potential symptoms of traumatic brain injuries:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Speech problems
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of cognitive skill
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Confusion
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety or depression

If someone you know experiences such symptoms after an accident or injury, you should seek medical attention right away. With brain injuries, every second counts. Call 911 if you suspect this is an emergency or visit your local emergency room or urgent care center for treatment.

Treatment for a Traumatic Brain Injury

The type of treatment that one gets will depend on the severity of the injury. People who have a mild TBI will likely be told to rest and take over-the-counter drugs to reduce the pain. People who have suffered a traumatic brain injury will need to be monitored closely at home. They may also need to attend follow-up appointments. People who have a moderate-to-severe TBI may be given diuretics, anti-seizure medications and coma-inducing drugs. In some cases, emergency surgery may be required.

Complications and Long-Term Effects

A severe traumatic brain injury can cause a person to go into a coma. This coma can last from a few days to a few weeks. Some people go into a vegetative state after being in a coma. A vegetative state is where a person is conscious, but they are unaware of their surroundings. This can sometimes be permanent.

A TBI can also result in cognitive, behavior and communication problems. There has also been evidence to suggest that people who suffer from repeated traumatic brain injuries are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

How Long Do You Have to File a Brain Injury Claim?

Brain injury lawsuits in Mississippi are subject to a three-year statute of limitations, meaning you typically have until the third anniversary of the date of the incident that caused your injury to file a claim in civil court. If you attempt to file a claim after the statute of limitations has expired, your case will likely be dismissed and you will be unable to recover compensation for your injuries.

While three years may seem like a long time, it is important you take action sooner than later. Brain injury cases can be extremely complex and require a thorough investigation to compile all the facts and evidence and determine the full extent of your injuries.
