In June 2021, Exactech announced a recall of nearly 100,000 hip devices that were manufactured with Exactech Connexion GLX Liners. Less than a year later, in February 2022, the company once again recalled more of its products. This time, the recall targeted knee and ankle replacement devices. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) got involved and classified the recall as Class II importance.
Specifically, Exactech noted that “all knee and ankle arthroplasty polyethylene inserts packaged in non-conforming bags” could become problematic and potentially dangerous to the patient. The company reported that any such hip, ankle, or knee replacement devices made since 2004 could become defective if they were not packaged in a non-conforming vacuum bag. This defect could cause the medical devices to corrode as the material was oxidized.
Dangers of Recalled Exactech Replacement Devices
As a defective Exactech replacement hip, ankle, or knee device corrodes, it becomes more and more dangerous to the patient. They might begin to experience various symptoms with seemingly no source. A doctor’s thorough diagnosis will likely be required to identify the failing replacement device as the cause.
Defective Exactech Connexion GXL Liners may cause the patient to suffer from:
- Chronic pain
- Worsened mobility or disability
- Unstable posture
- Bone tissue damage or osteolysis
Correcting the issue will almost certainly require revision surgery. All forms of surgery carry their own risks and complications, so it is unfair for a patient to have to face these risks again because Exactech did not create a safe medical product.
Exactech’s Negligence & Liability
Exactech can be held strictly liable for its product failures through federal product liability laws. However, its negligence goes beyond just manufacturing mistakes. Reportedly, the company did not warn patients and the general public that there were serious issues with its hip, ankle, and knee replacements. Instead, it only gave a brief notice to some orthopedic surgeons, who then had to take it upon themselves to notify their patients.
This lackadaisical approach to warning people about the products’ dangers is unacceptable and could be tantamount to egregious corporate negligence. Both forms of negligence could make the company fully liable for patient damages caused by the product defects.
Exactech might owe you compensation that helps pay for:
- Revision surgery and future medical care
- Medical bills related to the previous surgery
- Wages lost while you recover
- Pain, suffering, and disability
