What Is Benicar?
Benicar is a brand name for olmesartan, a prescription drug used to treat hypertension and reduce blood pressure. Benicar is a drug made by Japanese manufacturer Daiichi Sankyo, and it is promoted by Forest Laboratories in the United States.
In 2012, more than 10 million prescriptions of Benicar have been made for approximately two million patients in the United States, according to the FDA.
Known Benicar Side Effects
Patients who take Benicar have reported a number of troubling side effects, including:
- Chronic Diarrhea That Results in Significant Weight Loss
- Sprue-Like Enteropathy
- Villous Atrophy
- Lymphocytic Colitis
Both sprue-like enteropathy and villous atrophy, for reference, are conditions associated with the destruction of the intestinal lining after a bout with severe and chronic diarrhea and/or substantial weight loss. These conditions may lead to frequent bouts of hospitalization. In the worst cases, patients may experience complications such as renal (kidney) failure.
People who have experienced these gastrointestinal diseases and side effects have begun filing lawsuits against the maker of Benicar. All the while, the FDA reported 23 findings of sprue-like enteropathy that can be linked to Benicar.
A Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist was the first to link Benicar with these symptoms, and he made the choice to take his patients off Benicar. After doing so, all of his patients improved their conditions and gained weight. He published these findings in August of 2012.
Benicar’s manufacturer, Daiichi Sankyo, has already paid $39 million to settle charges that it gave doctors who prescribed Benicar illegal kickbacks. The FBI indicated Daiichi Sankyo’s payments will resolve allegations that the company violated the False Claims Act and committed Medicare fraud. In the meantime, olmesartan (Benicar) is still on the market, despite the fact that Benicar lawsuits continue to grow in number.
